Personality & Traits

General Overview Alex is a nice guy, too nice most would say. All the rest of the men and women in the Raiders would give off a dangerous vibe, but not Alex. Some people said he reminded them of Ferdinand the Bull from the children’s story. Alex will fight, but only when he has to, and then he’ll fight well. He enjoyed the training and the skill required to be a SAARC and work alongside Marine Corps Critical Skills Operators, just like he enjoys the training and the skill required to master Filipino martial arts. But he takes no pleasure in having to use that training and those skills, beyond the satisfaction of doing his job well. That’s why he left the Raiders to be a fleet Independent Duty Corpsman. Sure, he’ll have to go on Away Teams, and there will be combat, but most of his day will be spent caring for the sick and the injured.

Alex is a little too nice. He was never entirely comfortable in the Raiders. He’s technically very good with Filipino Martial Arts, but he doesn’t like hurting people.

Despite being raised by highly intelligent, well educated people, Alex is not as intellectual as he would like. He’s intelligent enough to do what he does and do it well. He’s more than just a pretty face, but he’s no scholar.

Personal History Alex was born on Earth in San Francisco in 2352. His mother Catalea was (and still is) a Starfleet Nurse and his father was (and still is) a novelist. In the 2350s, families were not yet permitted on starships, but they were permitted on certain starbases and ‘shore’ assignments, and those are where Alex spent his early childhood. Eventually, families were allowed on starships, and since Alin could do his work practically anywhere, Catalea applied for a starship position. She got one, the first of many and Alin and young Alex went with her.

When he was 16 years old, Alex met a 15 year old Trill named Jayla Kij. Due to an accident, Jayla was joined too early and as a result was, in layman’s terms, a hot mess. However, she was also gorgeous and Alex was a bit smitten.

Now, Alex is a really nice guy. Most would say too nice for his own good. He saw Jayla in pain and struggling and set out to win her heart by cheering her up. Unfortunately, Jayla found Alex and his sweet attempts to make her smile absolutely the most annoying and irritating thing about her situation. That didn’t stop Alex, but it did get him down sometimes. A few years later, Alex enlisted in Starfleet and left Jayla in the aft sensors.

Catalea was a little disappointed that Alex failed to gain entrance into Starfleet Academy, and again when the two civilian universities he’d applied to also rejected him, but in part she blamed Alin and herself. Perhaps they had pushed him too hard, pushed him to apply to schools that he didn’t have even a fair chance of getting into. Catalea admired her son for not letting that stop him from living his life and for choosing a life of service to others.

Alex had spent a lot of time hanging around in Sickbay while growing up. He helped out with patients with anything that didn’t require medical skill. Read to them, fed them, helped them walk around or walk to and from the head. Being the nice guy that he was, helping people made him feel good, so it seemed natural for him to become a corpsman. Things took a turn, though, when he was routed into being a corpsman with the marines. He fought in the final year of the Dominion War and spent an additional year with a conventional Marine platoon. Someone encouraged him to apply to be a Special Amphibious/Aerospace Reconnaissance Corpsman. Alex wondered if he had the killer instinct for that kind of work, but he wanted to challenge himself, so he went for it. He was accepted into the SAARC pipeline in 2376 and completed his training in 2377. He spent the next eleven years working with the Marine Raider Regiment on various Marine Special Operations Teams (MSOTS). By that time, while he felt he’d done important work with the Raiders, Alex wanted a change to a position where he spent more time helping and less time hurting. He applied to Independent Duty Corpsman School and was accepted. Just prior to attending IDC School, Alex went to Senior Enlisted Academy. He completed his IDC training in 2389 and was assigned to the USS Blackhawk, where he reconnected with childhood crush Jayla Kij and the two began a relationship. In 2390, Alex and Jayla were assigned to the USS Sherman Potter.

Special Operations Combatant Medic Course (21 weeks):
Med Fundamentals (7 Weeks)
This is the first section of training. It covers pharmacology, pharmaceutical calculations, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic physical exam techniques, and medical documentation. During the anatomy and physiology section, our students are privileged to use the cadaver lab located in the schoolhouse facility.
SOCM Trauma Modules (7 Weeks)
This training covers AHA Basic Life Support, advanced airway management, patient management skills, pre-hospital trauma emergencies and care, advance trauma tasks/skills, pre-hospital trauma emergencies and care, advanced trauma skills, operating room procedures, and minor surgical skills. Students take the FEDREMT-Basic examination after completing these subjects. Included in the Trauma Modules is the Advanced Tactical Practitioner phase. This covers obstetrics and pediatric emergencies, cardiac pharmacology, training in combat trauma management, Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Professionals, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Clinical Internship: (4 Weeks)
The students then go on the Paramedic clinical rotation and field internship at one of several Level I Trauma Centers. This consists of 2 weeks of ambulance, 2 weeks of hospital. The hospital training consists of rotations in the emergency department, labor and delivery, surgical intensive care, pediatric emergency department, and operating room. Ambulance training consists of assignment to an Advanced Life Support EMS unit responsible for responding to a variety of emergency calls.
Fleet Medicine: (3 Weeks)
The last phase of training is conducting Sick Call procedures. This covers the care of routine walk-in patients under the supervision of a physician or physician’s assistant at one of the many clinics at Starfleet Medical.

Introduction to being a Laboratory technician. Most aspects of laboratory are covered to include: Microscopic studies, Hematology, Parasitological, Urinalysis, and Stool studies

This phase covers Pre and Post-Operative Patient Care including S.O.A.P notes and Records and Reports

Special Operations Clinical Training (4 Weeks)
During this 30-day deployment students receive clinical training/experience and are evaluated on their ability to apply patient assessment, management, and care skills in various clinical settings. The SOIDC students rotate through Obstetric/Gynecological, Emergency Department, Labor and Delivery, Surgery, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Radiology, Preventive Medicine/Community Health, and the Outpatient/Family Practice Clinic.

Independent Duty Corpsman School (12 months):
During this 12-month course, students receive a mix of classroom and clinical training. Emphasis is placed on learning Anatomy and Physiology; Physical Diagnosis; Clinical Lab; Pharmacy; Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear Medicine; Preventive Medicine; Supply; Food Service Sanitation; Substance Abuse; Medical Department Responsibilities; Medical Diagnosis and Treatment; Pest Control; Planetary, Starbase, and Shipboard Organization; Management of Medical/Surgical Emergency Dental Conditions; Starfleet Occupational Safety and Health; Advanced Cardiac Life Support; Tactical Combat Casualty Care; Maintenance Material Management (3M); Dive Medicine, EVA Medicine; certification as a Basic Life Support Instructor and registration for a Federation Provider Identification (FPI) number. Students also complete EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) qualification.

First Line Leadership Development Program (FLLDP)
-Leadership Training for enlisted personnel in the ranks of Crewman to Petty Officer 2nd Class, who are in a “first leadership position” within their chain of command and are those who are responsible for the growth, development and daily direction of their subordinates.

Primary Leadership Development Program (PLDP)
-Leadership Training for Petty Officer 2nd Class to Petty Officer 1st Class personnel who will be assigned leadership roles and responsibilities that include planning and executing divisional functions. They will also be responsible for the professional and personal growth of personnel within their division.

Advanced Leadership Development Program (ADLP)
-Leadership Training for Petty Officer 1st Class and Chief Petty Officer personnel, who are assigned to leadership roles and responsibilities in the administration, supervision and training of their division or department, including the professional and personal growth of personnel within that division or department.

Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA)
-Designed to enhance the leadership skills of senior NCOs.
